Security Beefed Up at Ferry Crossings

The Uganda Police Force introduces security at all ferry crossings in the country to ensure security of persons and their properties.

The move follows observations that most ferry crossings were at risk because they lacked security.

A December 16 letter by Christopher Obache, the former Commandant of the Mobile Police Patrol Unit in Naguru, directed that respective commanders take charge of ferry crossings to have security set up.

Areas identified for police presence include Lalopi ferry crossing and Obongi in West Nile.  Butiaba, Tonya, Wanseko, Masindi port, Mutunda and Panyimur In Albertine region ,  Ntoroko ferry crossing in Rwenzori region and Namasale and Kungu crossings in North Kyoga region .

Others are Namasagali in Busoga region, Lwampanga in Savannah region and Nabuganye ferry crossing in Ssezibwa region.

Obache directed that the Regional Police Commanders ensure that a minimum of four officers are deployed at every ferry crossing.

The officers who will be manning these ferry crossing have four tasks among which is to check on the excess loading of ferries, provide security of persons and property and check on wrong elements that use the crossing points.

The officers will also provide other policing services to the population using the ferry and ensure they maintain a twenty four hours – seven days a week surveillance.
