Court battles have delayed the proposed redevelopment of the Old taxi park. Peter Kauju, the Supervisor of Communications and Media Relations Kampala Capital City Authority says the redevelopment of the Old Taxi park can’t commence until the two pending courts cases over the park are disposed off.
Kauju however declines to disclose the identities of the two entities that have dragged the authority to the court and details of the case, saying the issue can only be handled by the High Court. He explains that the design is complete and the funds are available for the project.
According to the new design, KCCA proposes to construct a multi layer parking lot in the old Taxi Park. Kauju says the authority has embarked on opening up boundaries in areas that are not under contention at the park. He says once this is done, the authority will embark on renovations and repairs awaiting the final court decisions on the contested plots.
Kauju says the development will decongest the city once the multi level parking lot is done. He is also optimistic that the court will rule in favor of the authority so that development can take place. Kauju also says apart from constructing the parking lot, the authority will continue with the ongoing beautification of the streets and other facilities within the city.
Last year, Erias Lukwago, the embattled city Lord Mayor blasted KCCA for messing up the construction of the new taxi park. Lukwago said government hijacked the construction process and put up a facility that does not match the standards of a modern city.
