The option is in response to requests from mobile phone subscribers to Uganda Telecom not to receive unsolicited subscriber SMS alerts from companies running different promotions.

Commenting on this, Mr. Ali Amir, the Managing Director at Uganda Telecom said, “We are proud to be the only operator that offers a differentiated and unique DND service that allows our customers to opt out of receiving subscription SMS alerts but still receive promotional SMS alerts about the company’s products and services or both.”

To subscribe to the DND list, a subscriber is required to call UTL’s toll free line 100 or send an email to customercare.info@utl.co.ug; provide his or her phone number and they will be placed under the DND category of clients.

Telecoms, he said, send messages to their subscribers keeping them abreast of their different products and services. The subscription messages however are sent on behalf of third parties and these allow mobile subscribers to get tips or alerts on different services of their preference such as sports, health tips to mention but a few. “It’s these subscription SMS alerts that have become a pain for most of our mobile customers. At Uganda Telecom, we work tirelessly to ensure that our customers receive high quality of services from our network. That is why we have introduced the Do Not Disturb option that allows our mobile subscribers to opt out of receiving these SMS alerts,” Mr. Amir added.

“Our subscribers that opt out of the unsolicited subscription SMS alerts will still be able to access and receive promotional messages about our services and products. This remains a direct communication channel to subscribers,” Amir added.
