In a bid to enhance their water production capacity and reduce on Uganda’s water deficit, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) have disclosed plans to extend 908kms of water infrastructure across the country.

The revelation was made by NWSC’s Executive Director, Silva Mugisha during the second stakeholders meeting at the entity’s International Resource Center in Bugolobi where he noted that the development is part of the corporations 5-year Strategic Direction that aims at increasing clean water accessibility to all Ugandans.

Mugisha noted that the Strategic Direction is geared towards enhancing the corporation service delivery to 100%, increase both its geographical expansion and infrastructure development, customer satisfaction.

He said that, “The Corporation is committed to extend 908kms of water mains across the country in the financial year 2014/15 and this will be done alongside increasing water production capacity. The corporation has also undertaken rapid geographical expansion with water utility expanding from 27 towns in 66 towns as per June-2014.”
While addressing a group of NWSC stakeholders, customers and public at the public debate, Dr. Eng. Christopher Ebel, the chairman, NWSC noted that the baraza is an opportunity for the corporation to update the public on the progress of its infrastructure service delivery plans and what it plans to do for its customers.

Ebel further noted that although there are many strides being taken to improve water accessibility to Ugandans, limited up to date technology, finances and revenue deficits from government institutions is holding back the institution’s development plans.
The baraza strengthens the public engagement and collaboration of NWSC with its stakeholders.
“The baraza is an opportunity for the corporation to get valuable feedback from its stakeholders and customers. It further strengthens the public engagement and collaboration of NWSC with its stakeholders to ensure continued improvement in service delivery and accelerated service coverage.

There are still high revenue water losses through leakages, unpaid arrears from government institution and we hope pre-paid metering would help curb this.” It should be noted that water arrears among government institution was initially at Shs40bns and the Corporation noted that about Shs25bn has been pledged and meant to be paid by end of this financial year.

But the entity authority notes that although the deficit is taking a toil on its service delivery, the high rate of urbanization and not forgetting the high population which results to increased demand of water.
