According to Tumubweine, the monitoring centre will be done in collaboration with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Government is to purchase a gambling monitoring machine valued at five billion shillings, National Lotteries Board Chairman Manzi Tumubweine has said.
Tumubweine told local media in an interview that the Lotteries Board had taken a benchmarking tour in South Africa where a monitoring machine is used to regulate activities of the gambling sector. The Lotteries boss said the machine would be bought in the next financial year when government allocates it money.
Tumubweine says the machine is necessary if govern is to standardize the gambling sector. He says the machine will help in identifying those evading taxes and fraud.
According to Tumubweine, the monitoring centre will be done in collaboration with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
He said the board needed one machine in national lottery and another in Uganda Revenue Authority. The lottery boss cautioned that when the monitoring machine gets into the country, it would be mandatory for betting companies to purchase machines that comply with the new monitoring equipment.
Tumubweine, a former Member of Parliament and minister, also hinted on the plan to have permits issued to eligible gamblers, saying the proposal is still in infant stages, but would be a good remedy against underage gambling.
He said the growth of gambling required a strong legal frame work to protect Ugandans from being manipulated.
The Lotteries chief said some foreigners have come and started gambling firms and ripped off gullible Ugandans.
Dr. Innocent Nahabwe, the proprietor of Kagwirawo Sport Betting Company in Kansanga, says that although the move would affect people operating old machines, it is good to embrace technology. He said it would facilitate professionalization of the industry.
He however noted that at Kagwirawo, they already embraced technology because their betting is on line.
