BoU Boss Mutebile Bedridden In South Africa

Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the Governor of the Bank of Uganda is bedridden in a South African hospital.

Mutebile was taken to south Africa for treatment on May 8, 2015.

A week ago, the Governor, had briefly visited Nakasero hospital to receive medical attention because he was not feeling well.

Accordingly, he was admitted and treated for a few days.

Following the treatment, he improved and was recovering very well and the hospital discharged him to continue his recuperation at home.

The doctors also advised that during this rest, he seeks a full and thorough medical review; and referred him to South Africa.

Indeed, following that advice, the Governor is currently in South Africa for a medical review.

Who is Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile

Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile is a Ugandan economist and banker.

He is the Governor of Bank of Uganda, the central bank of Uganda. He was first appointed to that position on 1 January 2001, and was re-appointed for a second five-year term on 1 January 2006. In November 2010, he was re-appointed for a third five-year term, effective 12 January 2011.

Tumusiime-Mutebile was born on 27 January 1949, in Kabale District, southwest Uganda as one of nine children into a peasant family.

He attended Kigezi High School for his O-Level studies (Grades: S1-S4).

He then attended Makerere College School in Kampala, for his A-Level studies (Grades: S5-S6).

In 1970, he entered Makerere University, where he was elected to the position of president of the university students’ guild, with the intention of studying economics and politics.

He was forced to flee Uganda in 1972, after he gave a speech, publicly criticizing the expulsion of Asians from the country by Idi Amin.

He fled to England, United Kingdom via Tanzania, and was able to finish his studies at Durham University.

In October 1974 he began his post-graduate studies at Balliol College, Oxford, before returning to East Africa.

He entered the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to lecture and conduct research while pursuing his doctorate (PhD) in Economics.

In 2009, Nkumba University, a private university based in Nkumba, near Entebbe, awarded him an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree, in recognition of his “great contribution towards the development of Uganda’s financial sector”
