The Vice Chancellor of UTAMU, Prof. Benon Basheka has written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) offering a scholarship to Betty Chemisto.

The selfless and commendable act of this officer caught the public’s attention after her photo of her on duty during a heavy downpour went viral on social media.

“As Uganda Technology And Management University (UTAMU) which was started to train and produce graduates with a new attitude to work in public service by officers in government, the private sector and the NGO sector, we sincerely commend this officer,” said Prof. Basheka.

He commends her for demonstrating a high level of professionalism and commitment to her work which undoubtedly contributes to the good image of Uganda Police Force.

“As a university, we are offering a scholarship to this officer. If she has a Bachelor’s Degree, she will be offered a one year scholarship for undertaking a postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration or any other postgraduate diploma of her choice. If she does not have a Bachelor’s Degree, the scholarship will be for a three year Bachelor’s Degree. The scholarship will specifically involve a tuition waiver on the program of her choice.”

In a letter to the IGP dated 14th November, Prof Basheka says the officer will be able to study without compromising her work obligations thanks to the UTAMU blended-distance learning mode of academic delivery.

“Given that she is a serving officer and needs to maintain her work, she will choose the blended-distance learning mode of academic delivery which requires her to work and study at her free time. This mode only requires her to come to the university to undertake assessments at designated times of the 15-week semester but the rest of the teaching can be done on our e-learning system using our robust e-library services and online engagement with lecturers as long as she has access to the internet in any part of the country.  This mode of education delivery can benefit your other officers who are busy at work but need to further their education at any level. “

UTAMU’s next intake begins on 10th of January 2016 and the officer can formally apply to the university.
