President M7 fresh from the United States has uesday afternoon commissioned the new multimillion Police factory, a public-private partnership with a Chinese company M/S Poly-technologic Inc, which will produce cops uniforms to cut costs of importing uniforms for the forces.
It will also manufacture school uniforms, private security company uniforms, and organization uniforms to generate income for police in the long run meaning current suppliers the Jinja-based textile manufacturer Nytil will be out of business.
The facility is located at plot 66/68 Jinja Road, Lugogo. It has the capacity to produce 100 uniforms per day and is programed to expand to 200 uniforms per day in the due course.
“This facility is the start of a long journey. I commend our Chinese friends for trading with Uganda through assisting us because this provides employment and will cut costs of uniform,” President Museveni said.
The factory will employ about 200 people in including police officers, their spouses and civilians for mass production of uniforms according to Godfrey Bangirana, the police director of logistics and engineering.
Almost 70 police officers are in China to gain skills in garment manufacturing.
